The Hunt 2014
carved jelutong, japan black stain
Lying in repose, this work creates an encounter with the familiar image of a dead kangaroo, the animal brings into question the intent of the hunt as an act of vandalism or survival. Isolated from a natural context, The Hunt explores problematic relationships of triumph and guilt inherent to a society that continues to benefit from the proceeds of institutionalised rapacity. The work recalls memories of ‘roo shooting in the wheat-belt, an Australian rite of passage defined by an implicit sense of violent entitlement over the land and it’s inhabitants.
