Sang Kancil | bronze | 24x13x39cm
Sang Kancil is the Mouse Deer, a character in Malay folklore known for his cunning in overcoming adversaries far larger and more powerful than himself by wit alone. The artist conceived this work in response to his mother Maimunah Abdullah's experiences in navigating a whole new set of cultural circumstances when she migrated from Malaysia to Australia in 1972.
The work was commissioned by the UWA Cultural Precinct through a generous bequest from past Arts student, Natalie de Julia (1931-2017), whose father migrated from Russia to Australia in 1924, and who retained a great affection for the UWA campus.
